Carlos Pena Romulo (1899-1985), a famous Philippine general, diplomat and journalist, was renowned for his heroic activities during WWII. He was an aide-de-camp to US General Douglas MacArthur on Corregidor Island and in Australia. He won the Pulitzer Prize in 1941,, and in 1948 he served as president of the United Nations Conference on Freedom of Information in Geneva. He was president of the U.N. General Assembly, 1949-1950; Philippine ambassador to the United States, 1952; chairman of the U.N. Security Council, 1957; and was the president of the University of the Philippines. General Carlos P. Romulo stated:
“Never forget, Americans, that yours is a spiritual country. Yes, I know you’re a practical people. Like others, I’ve marvelled at your factories,, your skyscrapers, and your arsenals. But underlying everything else is the fact that America began as a God-loving, God-fearing, God-worshiping people.”
