Jonathan Trumbull (1710-1785), was the British Governor of Connecticut who had been appointed by King George III. He was also the father of the famous Revolutionary artist of the same name (1756-1843). Jonathan Trumbull became sympathetic to the American cause and, in 1773, he openly shared:
“It is hard to break connections with our mother country, but when she strives to enslave us, the strictest union must be dissolved…’The Lord reigneth; let the earth rejoice; let the multitudes of isles be glad thereof” – the accomplishment of such noble prophecies is at hand.”
In the early 1770’s, as the tension was mounting in the Colonies prior to the Revolution, another governor who had been appointed by King George III, wrote to the Board of Trade in England:
“If you ask an American, who is his master? He will tell you he has none, nor any governor but Jesus Christ.”
